Introduction to ADSL

ADSL provides you with an always-on Internet connection with download speeds of up to 512Kbps, 1Mbps, or 2Mbps.

The key facts:

  • High-speed Internet access with download speeds of up to 512Kbps, 1Mbps or 2Mbps
  • The connection is always on - so no need to dial up to get online
  • You can still use your phone line for voice, fax and dial-up services at the same time as using the ADSL service, so no need for new phone lines for Internet access
  • Flat rate - there are no call charges for Internet usage, as everything is covered by the fixed monthly payment
  • Unlike cable, you don't need an engineer to come and install it
You own and install the ADSL router yourself

To subscribe to ADSL all you need is:

  • A BT phone line*
  • A Visa, Mastercard, Switch or Delta Card for billing
  • A USB or Ethernet port on your PC

*Subject to the availability of ADSL on your local exchange.

Can I still use my phone line while I'm connected to the Internet with Zetnet ADSL?

Yes, you can make calls, fax or even dial the Internet (ie, an ordinary dial-up Internet connection with another computer) whilst online with ADSL. You will receive a bill from your current phone operator for phone calls as normal.

How many computers can be connected to my ADSL connection?

ADSL allows you to directly connect one computer. But others may easily be connected through the connection using Windows connection sharing or other networking solutions. If you connect using a modem with an Ethernet port, you can connect that to a hub or switch.

What happens to my ADSL connection if I move location?

Zetnet can transfer your ADSL connection to your new location if you have had Zetnet ADSL for a minimum of one month. A moving charge of £50 ex VAT will be charged. However, depending on the location of your new home, you may not be able to get the service, as you need to live in a ADSL-enabled area. There may be a break in service of several days when you move, and it's a good idea to give us plenty of notice. Even if you keep the same phone number, the ADSL service will have to be moved. A minimum 12 month contract will apply to your connection in the new location.

To check if your future location is in a ADSL-enabled area and to arrange your move, call the ADSL sales team on 0870 743 0565.

Does it matter where in the house I would like to use my ADSL connection?

Your ADSL connection is only available on the line with the phone number you provided when registering for our service. However, if you have several sockets in the house using the same phone number, you can connect to whichever socket you choose. Just remember to plug a filter into each socket and that only one computer at a time can use the Zetnet ADSL service.

What is a filter and why do I need them?

Filters - also known as micro-filters - are little gadgets that you need if you are using a ADSL modem on a phone line that is shared with ordinary phones. It makes sure that the digital ADSL signals do not interfere with ordinary voice signals, and vice versa - and allows you to chat on the phone while simultaneously surfing the Internet at high speed.

Can I use a phone extension cable with the filters?

Phone extension cables have been known to cause problems in the past so we advise you not to use an extension cable.

Are there are any compatibility issues with Zetnet ADSL and internal phone systems?

There are a number of less common services that have compatibility issues:

  • Subscriber Private Metering
  • 30K loop
  • Private Circuits (leased lines)
  • Red Care
  • BT DataStream or VideoStream
  • Featurenet 5000 services
  • Private Branch Exchange (PBX or PABX) Lines
  • Telephone lines delivered over optical fibre (TPON)
  • ISDN/HomeHighway [*]

For more information about the above compatibility issues, please contact our ADSL Technical Support team on 0870 748 2368.

[*] ISDN and Highway lines can be converted by us to analogue phone lines for the purpose of providing ADSL. If we arrange this, it will happen on the same day as your ADSL is enabled. BT charge for this conversion.

Does ADSL work with an ISDN line or Home/Business Highway services?

No, you need to revert to an analogue line, which can then be upgraded to the new service. We can arrange this for you, and the conversion will happen on the same day as your ADSL is installed. This will be subject to a line check and Zetnet cannot provide any guarantees that the service will be available. Minimum contract periods may also apply to any ISDN/Home Highway contracts you already have, and BT will charge for the conversion.

How and when will I be billed for the service?

The one-off payment corresponding to the connection pack will be taken immediately, ie, from the date you register for the ADSL service. The payment corresponding to the monthly (or quarterly) fee will be taken 10 days after your registration for the service (as it may take up to 10 days to upgrade your phone line to broadband).

Both payments will be taken from your credit card or debit card.

The date of your first monthly (or quarterly) payment will depend on the date you register for ADSL. For example, if you register for ADSL on 1 April 2002, the first monthly payment will be taken 10 days later on 11 April 2002. Your next monthly payment will be due on 11 May 2002 and on the 11th day of every month thereafter.
