Dial Up - Psion (5 or 7)

written by Tony Walker (tony.walker@zetnet.co.uk)

Firstly install the Psion Messaging Suite onto your Psion. This will install some new options for you in Control Panel.

Setting up your modem

  • Select the "Modems" icon on the control panel. Select your modem. If yours is not listed then select Hayes compatible (Series 5) or General modem settings (S7). From that same "Modem settings" screen, select the "Edit" button. This will bring up a dialog box with four tabs.
  • On the "Modem" tab, Select the "Speed" using the following rough guidelines. 115200 for 28800 and faster modems, 57600 for 14400 and 19,200 modems, and 19200 for slower modems. This is the speed at which the computer can talk to the modem, NOT the speed the modem talks over the phone line at. Make sure the "Connect using" box says "Serial" (S5) or "Cable" (S7) if you are connected via the external cable, "Infrared" if you are talking to a modem in a mobile phone, or "PC card" (S7) if you are using a PC Card (PCMCIA) modem.
  • On the "Initialisation" tab, enter your initialisation string. Most modems will be quite happy using AT&F as the initialistion string in all 3 initialisation string boxes.
  • On the "Handshaking" tab (S5) or the "Advanced" tab (S7), select Hardware for flow control. You may need to experiment a little with the "Terminal detect" and "Carrier detect" check boxes to get a reliable connection. I have found with my Pace 33600 modem that both boxes needed to be unchecked. On the S7 you need to select whether it is a fixed line (normal phone line) or a mobile phone connection.
  • Set the "Loudspeaker" and "Volume" settings on the "Options" tab according to your own preferences.
  • Once you have set up the 4 tabs for the modem settings to your liking, press the OK button in the bottom right corner, then press the OK button in the "Modem settings" box. This will return you to the control panel.

Setting up your connection

  • Internet icon in control panel
  • New button
  • Based upon standard settings - click ok
  • Service tab. Name = zetnet 56k - Dial-up = Use smart dialling - Ph no. = 44 845 059 1022
  • Account tab. Manual login unticked. Username to usernumber. Password to normal Zetnet password
  • Addresses tab. Both "Get IP address from server" and "Get DNS address from server" should be checked
  • Login tab. "Use login script" should be unchecked
  • Advanced tab. "Enable PPP extensions" should be unchecked. "Allow plain text authentication" should be checked.

Click the Done button and go back to "Current Internet Service" selection screen. Should have "Zetnet 56k" selected. Click OK to go back to the control panel.
Hope you enjoy surfing and e-mailing with your Psion. If you find any errors in the instructions then e-mail me. The script should be bug free, as I set it up like you would by editing my details. Finally don't blame me for the size of your phone bill <grin>.
