The UK's longest established independent ISP
Support - CGI - Hit Counters

This document explains how to implement a counter on your Zetnet web site. It is important that you read the contents of this page prior to installation of the counter on your web site.

Note: If your site is under a sub-domain or a full domain then the counter must first be activated for your site. To get a counter activated send a request to webweaver@zetnet.net being sure to state the domain for which the counter is required.

Failure to have your counter activated will result in the counter displaying the following error message:
Host: "www.domain" is not authorised

NOTE: on some servers this can differ - if you are having problems please contact webweaver@zetnet.net

Basic Counter Set-up

To use the basic webcounter requires the following line of code to be inserted at the desired position in your HTML script:

<IMG SRC="/cgi-zet/wwwcount.cgi?df=userid-counterreference">

Where: userid is your FTP login (the one you use to upload your pages) counterreference is a unique character sequence (name) that identifies that counter. It cannot contain any slash (/) characters.

You must enter your own values for the parameters above, simply copying the HTML as above will give false readings and the count will be zeroed at regular intervals.

In it's default set-up consecutive "Reload" from the same host will not increment the counter.

Setting the Counter Start Figure

When setting up the new counter the starting figure can be set by adding the parameter:

|st=####

Where: #### is the number the counter is to start from, for example if your old counter registered 1234 hits then the script for your new counter would be:

<IMG SRC="/cgi-zet/wwwcount.cgi?df=userid-counterreference|st=1234">

This can only be done when you first upload the counter script to the server, once your counter file has been created it can not be altered using this parameter.

Other Counter Enhancements

There is a large range of additional features which may be used with this counter including different styles and invisible counters etc.

It should be noted that Zetnet do not offer technical support on the use of any counter functions other than those which appear on this page.

The information on the other features available can be found here.

Getting the Counter Figure Altered

Should it be necessary that the figure on your counter has to be re-set then send the details by e-mail to pm@zetnet.net

Counter re-setting will only be undertaken if there is a valid reason which must be stated in the e-mail. If you are changing from a different counter script to this one and wish to carry the count forward then please use the counter parameter described above.
